Initial Visit Information

What To Expect From A Treatment
A thorough examination and health history are taken, including 'reading' your tongue and pulse. An individual diagnosis will determine the selection of acupuncture points, physical modalities, and herbal prescriptions. Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine, sterile, stainless steel needles into certain points on the body to regulate functional activity and blood circulation.

What will it feel like?
Most people find treatments very relaxing, which brings on a feeling of well-being. Most are surprised at how comfortable they are, and how easily the needles are placed. Some people even go to sleep during a treatment.
Upon entry of the needles, the patient may feel a slight sensation, and then pressure or a "dull" or "surging" reaction when the needle reaches the "qi", or correct point. After the treatment you may feel energized or may experience a deep sense of relaxation and well-being.

Why do you want to feel my pulses?
There are 12 pulse positions on each wrist that that I will palpate. Each position corresponds to a specific meridian and organ. I will be looking at 27 ndividual qualities that reflect overall health.

Why do you want to look at my tongue?
The tongue is a map of the body. It reflects the general health of the organs and meridians. I will look at the color, shape, cracks, and coating  on your tongue.

Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is extremely safe. It is an all-natural, drug-free therapy, yielding no side effects except feelings of relaxation and well-being. There is little danger of infection from acupuncture needles because they are sterile, used once, and then discarded.

Number of Treatments Needed
Usually one treatment per week for 4 weeks is where I start with my new patients. That way I can figure out what is going on internally and start to see how quickly the patient is responding to treatments. Acute ailments may be resolved in a shorter amount of time, and chronic ailments may take a little longer. The longer you have ben experiencing something, generally the longer it takes to be resolved. The healthier the individual is prior to treatments, the faster they will respond. Likewise, the more willing a patient is to listen and follow nutritional, lifestyle, and herbal advice, the faster they will see results.
